While Cardinals president Bill DeWitt Jr. starts the search for a new general manager, he says the team needs an answer from Tony LaRussa soon, so they know whether or not they need to go looking for a new manager.

DeWitt said the answer doesn’t need to come today or tomorrow, but needs to come soon.

I wonder if the Cardinals would consider bringing back Joe Torre if LaRussa does leave and if The Boss in the Bronx fires Torre?  I know a lot of ifs, but it’s intriquing to think about.

I personally have never been a big fan of Torre.  He didn’t do much as a manager with the Mets, Braves, and then the Cardinals from 1990-1995.  The Yankees won four World Series in Torre’s first five years and then it’s been a seven year drought.  I think he was in the right place at the right time hitting a Yankee nucleus that was in their prime.  With all the talent that team continues to have, how has Torre not been able to motivate, bring those veterans together, or pull the right strings to give that team another title?  It’s time for Torre to move on.  I hope the Cardinals go in a completely different direction.  They’ve been there, done that!
