St. Louis remains the worst city in the nation for major crimes in the latest figures from the FBI. The rating is based on crimes-per-resident statistics.

But St. Louis police claim things have turned around in 2007. In fact, they say August was the safest August in St. Louis since 1990. A police spokesman credits a 50-member undercover crime suppression unit for much of that improvement.

The FBI says violent crimes in Missouri’s biggest city, Kansas City, dropped sharply last year, compared to 2005. Nationally, violent crime went up about two percent.
