The Chiefs looking for their first win of the season at home against the Minnesota Vikings, got help from rookie wide receiver Dwayne Bowe in their 13-10 win over Minnesota.

After a three and out on the Chiefs opening possession, the Vikings took over at midfield.  After Adrian Peterson was stopped for a loss on their first play of the game, Peterson got going.  Peterson had runs of 16 yards and then an 11 yard touchdown run around right end for a quick 7-0 lead, just 4:58 into the game.

The battle for field position was the name of the game after that and it wasn’t until there was :35 left in the first quarter that Chiefs offense got their first, first down on two runs by Larry Johnson.  The Chiefs were moving the ball, but a fumble by Damon Huard gave the Vikings the ball at the Chiefs 33.  Holcomb hit Visanthe Shiancoe for a 25 yard yard pass to set up first and goal.  Shiancoe then dropped a wide open pass from running back Mewelde Moore and the Chiefs held the Vikings to a Ryan Longwell 22 yard field goal to go up 10-0 with 9:18 to go in the first half.

Eddie Drummond brought the ensuing kickoff out to the Chiefs 43 to give KC their best starting position of the game, but the Chiefs went three and out again.  The fans who were pretty much booing from the Chiefs first offensive possession on, really let their frustrations known when the Chiefs punted on 4 th and 1 just inside Vikings territory.

On a third and short, Adrian Peterson fumbled at his own 29, giving Huard a short field to work with.  Tony Gonzales came up with a big third down catch over the middle to move the ball to the 15.  Larry Johnson got called for delay of game after flipping the ball away from the ref following a no gain, leaving the Chiefs a first and 20 from the 25 forcing the Chiefs Dave Rayner to kick a 39 yard field goal getting the Chiefs on the board with 3:32 to play in the half cutting the score to 10-3.

The Vikings moved down the field and in the closing seconds of the first half, Kelly Holcomb missed a receiver wide open for an easy six.  On the next play, Jared Allen back from his two game suspension recorded his first sack of the year pushing Minnesota back to the 40.  Then with three seconds left, the defensive line came up with their 3 rd sack of the game, (5 th of the season) to close the half.

The Vikings held Larry Johnson to just 25 yards on 13 carries.  Damon Huard, 6 of 10 for 37 yards.  Adrian Peterson, showed his speed and quick moves, picking up 56 yards on 14 carries with a touchdown.

Ball control was the name of the game in the third quarter.  After a lengthy drive by the Vikings resulted in a punt, the Chiefs buried deep in their territory at their own 8, started going the field more, opening up the passing game.  Only 20 rushing yards for the Chiefs in the third quarter.  That eventually led to a 49 yard field goal by Dave Rayner to cap off a 61 yard drive that took over six minutes off the clock to make the game 10-6 with 2:58 to go in the third quarter.  The defense came out inspired to close out third quarter to force a punt late in the third.  Starting from their 16, the Chiefs went back to the air on a 15 yard connection from Huard to Dwayne Bowe.  It was clear that Chiefs were going to have to pass their way back into the game.  Bowe with four catches on the drive, including a 16 yard touchdown pass to give the Chiefs a 13-10 lead with 9:23 to play.

After trading possessions, the Vikings would take over at their own 37 with 3:00 to play, but couldn’t move the ball and punted hoping to use the 2:00 warning and two timeouts to get the ball back and it worked as the Chiefs gave the Vikings one more chance with 1:39 to play from their own 20, but couldn’t move the ball preserving the win..
