The first Missouri county to eliminate property taxes is re-thinking that decision. Clay County dropped property taxes six years ago and decided to rely primarily on sales taxes to finance county operations.

The county is reconsidering its decision because a judge has ordered it to restore funding to about a dozen communities and special road districts that fix streets, roads, and bridges. That’s a $6-Million drain on the county’s general operating fund. The county administrator says the county has only a few days to make a decision. The county has to set its tax levy for 2008 by September 1st.
