The Kansas City Royals pounded out 14 hits, including a pair of home runs, as they downed the Oakland A’s 7-3 Saturday night at McAfee Coliseum.

Jason Smith was the hitting hero on the night, belting a pair of 2-run homers, his 3 rd and 4 th of the season. The first came in the 2 nd inning with two out. His second blast was hit in the 8 th inning to give the Royals a 4 run cushion. In between, Ross Gload hit his 5 th home run, a solo shot in the 6 th inning.

Odalis Perez (8-11) pitched 5 shutout innings, allowing only 3 hits, to earn the victory. Oakland starter Chad Gaudin (9-9) gave up 5 earned runs on 10 hits in 6 innings to take the loss.

The Royals (55-67) and the A’s (60-64) wrap up their weekend series Sunday afternoon in Oakland, with the Royals trying for a sweep. Kyle Davies (5-9) takes the mound for K.C. against Lenny DiNardo (7-6) for the Athletics.
