St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright pitched 8 1/3 scoreless innings before giving up a 2-run homer to James Loney, a blast that proved to be the winning hit as the Los Angeles Dodgers edged the Cardinals 2-1 Friday night at Busch Stadium.

Wainwright (10-9) allowed the 2 earned runs on 6 hits, while striking out 5 batters. L.A. starter Brad Penny was not involved in the decision, pitching 7 shutout innings, giving up 5 hits, while striking out 6. Joe Beimel (3-1) allowed a walk in 1 inning to pick up the win. Takashi Saito gave up 1 earned run on 2 hits in the 9 th inning to pick up his 29 th save.

The Cardinals (53-60) and the Dodgers (60-55) play again Saturday afternoon at Busch Stadium. Braden Looper (9-9) pitches for the Redbirds against the Dodgers’ Derek Lowe (8-10).
