The State Ethics Commission has asked the State Supreme Court to order all candidates who have gotten donations bigger than the old campaign finance law allowed to give back the money.

The Court earlier this month ruled the new campaign finance law that took off all limits at times when the General Assembly was not in session was unconstitutional. Then it asked parties to the case to recommend what should be done with donations made under that law.

The Commission’s response was written by the staff of Attorney General Jay Nixon, who will have to give back hundreds of thousands of dollars – but not nearly as much as Governor Matt Blunt would have to give back.

Nixon is challenging Blunt’s re-election.
