Senator Kit Bond (R-MO), a key supporter of the U.S. military mission in Iraq, remains a backer of the effort, but is expressing his disappointment with how the Bush Administration handled the situation in the wake of the toppling of Saddam Hussein.

Bond says the U.S. followed the "wrong policy" and should have had a counterinsurgency strategy in place. He says the U.S. did not send in enough troops to clear areas of the country and hold them. He says the right policy is in place now, adding that policy should be given a chance to succeed.

Bond says we are now seeing the results that come about when an effective counterinsurgency plan is in place.
