The St. Louis Cardinals avoid being swept by San Francisco, shutting out the Giants 7-0 in Sunday’s finale of their weekend series at Busch Stadium.

Ryan Ludwick and Chris Duncan were the game’s hitting heroes. Ludwick went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles and a run batted in. Duncan went 2 for 3 with a double and 3 runs batted in.

San Francisco slugger Barry Bonds went 0 for 3 on Sunday and 0 for the weekend series, failing to come up with a base hit, let alone a homer to move him closer to Hank Aaron’s all-time home run mark.

Cards’ starter Todd Wellemeyer (2-3) pitched 5 shutout innings for the win, giving up only 2 hits. Barry Zito (6-9) gave up 6 runs, 5 of them earned, in 4 innings to take the loss.

The Redbirds (40-45), with the exception of Manager Tony LaRussa and first baseman Albert Pujols who are headed to San Francisco for the All-Star Game, take time off for the All-Star break. They get back into action on Friday when they open a weekend series with the Phillies in Philadelphia.
