Fourth of July fireworks came a day early for the Kansas City Royals with their 17 run outburst on Monday, but they ran out of ammunition Tuesday, failing to put a run on the board as they were shut out 4-0 by the Seattle Mariners at Kauffman Stadium.

The M’s tallied 4 runs in the top of the 1 st inning for all the game’s scoring.

The Royals were held to 5 hits on the night. Mariners’ starter Jarrod Washburn (8-6) pitched 8 innings for the win. J.J. Putz pitched 1 perfect inning for his 24 th save. Brian Bannister (5-5) gave up 4 earned runs on 7 hits in 7 innings of work to take the loss.

Despite the loss, the Royals (36-49) win the series and enjoy a day off before opening a weekend set, on Friday, with the Tampa Devil Rays. The opening game has Odalis Perez (4-7) going to the hill for the Royals against Tampa Bay’s James Shields (6-4).
