Schools throughout the state are being encouraged to apply for grant funding to expand Math & Science and Health related afterschool programs.

A total of one million dollars is being made available to support the new grants. Jim Morris with the State Department of Education says grants are available for individual schools and for individual districts.

The Department of Education is facilitating the grant process by helping local schools and districts complete the necessary paperwork for grants that would be in the $10,000 to 20,000 range to allow a large number of schools to take part.

Afterschool programs are seen as something providing students with a safe environment when their parents are still at work.
