The Kansas City Royals’ effort to repeat their Friday night hit parade went down in flames, as did the Royals, as they could only muster three hits on the night as they were shut out 4-0 by the Philadelphia Phillies at Kauffman Stadium Saturday night.

The Phillies took the early lead with a run in the 2 nd inning. They added three more in the top of the 3 rd for all the runs they would need.

Jon Lieber (3-4) went the distance for the shutout, striking out 11. Gil Meche (3-6) took the loss in another contest in which the Royals failed to provide him with support. Meche struck out eight batters as he gave up the four runs, all of them earned, in seven innings of work.

The Royals (23-40) and Phillies (32-30) close out their weekend series Sunday afternoon at the K. Jorge De La Rosa (4-6) goes to the hill for Kansas City against Jamie Moyer (5-4) for Philadelphia.
