Jim Edmonds hit his sixth home run of the season, a two run shot in the second inning, but the St. Louis Cardinals could only manage one more run the rest of the way as the Houston Astros downed the Redbirds 8-3 Saturday afternoon at Minute Maid Park.

Houston homers by Carlos Lee, Luke Scott, and Adam Everett led the way for the Astros as they evened their weekend series with the Cards at a game apiece.

Cards’ starter Kip Wells (2-10) took the loss, giving up five earned runs in five innings of work. Houston starter Chris Sampson (5-5) picked up the win, allowing three earned runs in eight innings.

The rubber game of the weekend series goes Sunday afternoon, with Braden Looper (6-4) taking the mound for St. Louis (23-30) against Jason Jennings (0-1) for Houston.
