Missouri is giving up on its demands that any new Mississippi River bridge at St. Louis be a toll bridge. Until now, the State Trasnportation Department has maintained that the only way Missouri could afford its part of the bridge costs would be through tolls.

The original idea was for an eight-lane bridge costing about one-billion dollars. The new proposal is for four lanes, costing about $575-million. The federal government has put up $239-million for the bridge.
