St. Louis bats fell silent Friday as the Cardinals failed to put a run on the board, getting shut out 7-0 by the Padres in San Diego.

The Padres jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the 2 nd inning on a 2-run blast by Russell Branyan, his second home run of the season. San Diego added a run in the 3 rd on Khalil Greene’s fifth homer of the year. They scored one more in the 4 th inning before putting it away with three runs in the 7 th .

Redbirds’ starter Kip Wells (1-7) had a decent outing, giving up 4 earned runs on 7 hits in 6 innings. San Diego starting pitcher Jake Peavy (5-1) gave up 3 hits in 7 innings for the win.
