The Kansas City Royals wrap up their season opening homestand, with a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to the American League Champion Detroit Tigers at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City.

The Royals got on the board first with a solo home run by rightfielder Mark Teahen, who belted his first round-tripper of the season on a 0-1 pitch from Tigers starter Jeremy Bonderman. The Royals extended their lead in the bottom of the 3rd. With runners on 1st and 2nd, Mark Teahen singled to left field to drive in Tony Pena Junior to put the Royals on top 2-to-0.

Kansas City starter Brandon Duckworth pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings, giving up just 4 hits. He was taken out after giving up back-to-back singles in the 7th inning. Relievers Jimmy Gobble and Joakim Soria came in to end the inning. Soria pitched through the 8th inning.

Right hander David Riske came in to pitch the 9th. That’s when things fell apart. Riske gave up a double to leadoff batter Magglio Ordonez and a walk to Carlos Guillen before Ivan Rodriguez blasted a 420-foot home run to left field, giving the Tigers a 3-to-2 lead.

Bonderman pitched 6 innings, giving up 2 runs, both of them earned. He avoids the loss, thanks to the Rodriguez home run. Fernando Rodney, who came in to pitch the 8th inning, gets the win. Righthander Todd Jones closed out the 9th for his 3rd save.

The Royals, now 2-4 on the season, head north of the border to play the Blue Jays Monday night in Toronto.
