University of Missouri-Rolla Chancellor John Carney III will ask the Board of Curators next month to change the name of his school.  Carney says it should be Missouri University of Science and Technology.  To some people that means MUST, but for Carney it’s "Missouri S&T."

Carney will take his case to the curators when they meet in Rolla April 4th and 5th.

He first proposed the name change in his "State of the University" speech last October.  He says the current name does not distinguish the University for its role in engineering, science, and technology.  Since then he has been taking the temperatures of alumni, students, prospective students, faculty, staff, community leaders and corporate recruiters.  Carney says the new name will be a more marketable name for the school.

This would be the third name, at least, for the school that was founded as the University of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1870.  It was renamed the University of Missouri at Rolla in 1964 when the University was becoming a four-campus system.
