A joint legislative committee on education and student achievement meets on Tuesday to discuss Governor Matt Blunt’s proposal to bolster the teaching of mathematics, engineering, technology, and science in Missouri’s schools.
The METS initiative has a lot of support in the business community. It’s being driven by the METS Alliance, which includes the Missouri Chamber of Commerce .
Chamber President Dan Mehan says businesses need people who are skilled in math and science. Mehan says employers often have to train new hires in very simple arithmetic calculations and measurements. He says training of these new recruits can take months and it costs businesses money.
Mehan adds Missouri wants to attract high caliber jobs and opportunities, pointing out there is a need for better comprehension in math, engineering, technology, and science if those opportunities are to end up in this state.
