Supporters of a Senate bill to deal with illegal immigration hold a news conference to talk up the legislative effort. Senator Chris Koster of Harrisonville co-sponsors Senate Bill 348, which would enforce rules and regulations that already exist under federal law. Koster realizes there will be plenty of opposition to the legislation, but believes someone must take a stand. Among the provisions, the legislation denies illegal immigrants jobs, housing, higher education, and non-emergency welfare benefits. It also requires state and local law enforcement to take a more active role in enforcing federal immigration laws. At the news conference, Republican Koster was joined by Senator Tim Green of St. Louis – the co-sponsor – and a number of supporters including law enforcement and union officials.
