Jeff Suppan got hot at the right time. The pitcher affectionately known as “Soup” to Cardinals’ fans turned a good postseason into a four-year, $42 million contract with the Milwaukee Brewers.

The veteran right-hander still has to pass a physical for the deal to be finalized.

Suppan finished last season with a record of 12-7 and a 4.12 ERA, but turned it up a notch in the second half, going 6-2 with a sparkling 2.39 ERA in 15 starts after the All-Star break.

His postseason included a Game 3 win in the World Series, plus seven strong innings in Game 7 of the NLCS. His postseason accomplishments are nothing new to Cards’ supporters. Suppan threw six innings of two-run ball in Game 7 of the 2004 NLCS, a victory that propelled St. Louis to their first World Series since 1987.
