A last second basket by the SLU Billikens sent the home crowd into an uproar, and left the Missouri State Bears hanging their heads. Saint Louis’ Ian Vouyoukas tipped-in the winning score with under a second left to give the Bills an improbable 51-50 victory over the Bears last night.
SLU trailed by 11 midway through the second half, but rallied to improve their record to 9-2 for the first time since the 1994-95 season. That season also marks the last time the Bills advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
Officials originally ruled Vouyoukas’ basket occurred after time expired, but after the sixth review of the tip-in, referree Gerry Pollard signalled the basket counted, and pandemonium filled the Scottrade Center.
Vouyoukas finished with 13 points and six rebounds, while teammate Kevin Lisch scored 15 points.
Blake Ahearn, Missouri State’s leading scorer, was held scoreless for the first time this season. Deven Mitchell led the Bears with 15 points.
SLU returns to the Scottrade Center to battle North Carolina Friday night. MSU travels to Tampa, Florida, for Friday’s game with the University of South Florida.
