I-70 might be open, but traffic isn’t flowing very smoothly on the Missouri’s main interstate. The Missouri Department of Transportation closed I-70 between the Marshall Junction and Kingdom City for 4 ½ hours early Friday morning. It re-opened at 7:30am Friday, but some stretches only had one narrow, snow-packed lane going either direction. MoDOT says snow drifts and heavy ice have hampered efforts to completely clear it bring traffic patterns back to normal. Eastbound traffic on I-70 has been slowed west of Boonville as snow drifts and heavy ice caused many traffic accidents. Major back-ups have been reported in Montgomery County. Snow and traffic accidents have combined to clog traffic flow. I-70 isn’t the only problem area. Major back-ups have also been reported on I-44 around the cities of Rolla, St. James and Cuba. MoDOT says it is using all 3,000 workers and 1,500 pieces of equipment to clear the major roads. The snowstorm hit so hard early Friday morning plow crews had to be pulled from the roads in central Missouri, because they couldn’t see the roadway well enough. Several wrecks also kept crews from clearing the roads.
