Basketball Tigers Take Regular Season Opener 101-80 Over NC A&T

After two exhibition basektball games, the Mike Anderson era at the University of Missouri gets underway, for real, as the Missouri Tigers down the North Carolina A&T Aggies 101-80 at the Mizzou Arena in Anderson’s first official game as the Tigers Head Coach.

The Tigers scored early and often in the first half, hitting on 61 percent of their field goal opportunities, including 8 of 17 from 3-point territory. Missouri led the Aggies 59-37 at the intermission.

In the second half, the Mizzou scoring machine slowed down, but kept pace with the Aggies, scoring 42 points to reach the century mark for the first time since December 21st, 2003, when Missouri defeated University of North Caroling-Greensboro 106-89.

Forward Matt Lawrence led the way in Friday’s contest, hitting 9 of 16 field goal attempts, including 7 3-pointers. He also pulled down 8 rebounds. The Tigers don’t get much time to celebrate as they get back into action Saturday afternoon against the Army Black Knights who, along with North Carolina A&T and the Stetson Hatters, are in Columbia to compete in the John Thompson Foundation Classic. Army won its opening game 80-68 against Stetson.

Lobbyists Push For Legislators to Act on Medicaid One Week After Elections

The elections kept some legislators and replaced others… Director Sharon Feltman with the Missouri Association for Social Welfare says, whether freshman or incumbent, it’s time for legislators to address Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program before the state loses the programs in 2008. Medicaid restrictions already in effect have reduced eligibility for that program to just 22 percent of the public living in poverty. Feltman warns if the legislature doesn’t act in 2007, the public will lose its state-funded health insurance programs in June of 2008.

Final Numbers From Election Still Not In

It could be next week before we get the final numbers from Tuesday’s election. Some provisional ballots remain uncounted in St. Louis City and St. Louis County. A county election board spokesman says about 3,500 provisional ballots might not be verified and counted until next week. The verification and counting of about 540 provisional ballots in the city began on Wednesday. Provisional ballots are issued when there are questions about the registrations of people wanting to vote.

Wire Rope Comes Under New Ownership

One of St. Joseph’s major employers is coming under new ownership. Wire Rope Corporation of America is being bought by a private equity firm. About 450 people work at the St. Joseph plant. Company officials do not expect any layoffs. The company is now owned by KPS Special Situations Fund, a corporation turn-around company that buys companies with financial problems and sells them when they’ve become profitable again.

Auto Parts Company to Close Plants

An auto parts company with three plants in Missouri says it will announce late next month the locations of eight plants it is going to close. Dana Corporation also plans to modify or reject union contracts and eliminate retiree health care benefits. Dana says the plan will help it get out of bankruptcy. It has plants in Ballwin, which it has been trying to shelve for more than a year, Cape Girardeau and Columbia. Dana makes engine and chassis components and axles. It says brutal global competition, outrageous employee benefits, and inefficient plants have caused it to lose more than $2 billion in the last five quarters.
