The Rams lost the Governor’s Cup to the in-state rival Kansas City Chiefs 31-17. St. Louis dropped their third straight game after giving up 172 yards on the ground to Larry Johnson. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Chiefs have won three in a row, all with backup quarterback Damon Huard under center.

Kansas City turned three forced turnovers into an early 17-0 lead. Jared Allen had a big part in two of the turnovers. He stripped Marc Bulger on a sack and then later recovered Steven Jackson fumble.

Johnson scored his lone touchdown of the contest from one-yard out with 12:46 in the first quarter to give the Chiefs a 7-0 lead. Tony Gonzalez caught a three-yard touchdown from Huard followed by a Lawrence Tynes field goal in the second quarter to push the lead to 17-0. The Rams finally got on the board with a Steven Jackson plunge from two-yards out. Huard and Gonzalez later hooked up again to make it 24-7 before Jeff Wilkins’ 41-yard field goal cut the lead to 24-10 at halftime.

The two teams traded touchdowns in the second half before Kansas City walked away 31-17 winners.
