Bagnell Dribbles Due to Drought

Hydroelectric power barely trickles from Bagnell Dam at The Lake of the Ozarks as Ameren U-E tries to conserve water. Plant Superintendent Phil Thompson says the lake is experiencing its fourth-straight year of drought. Thompson says the plant relies soley on the weather to supply the dam with enough water to generate electricity. Ameren has been conserving water since August by operating the plant at a minimum flow required by the federal government. Thompson says this year could have the second-worst rate of electrically generated power since the plant was built in 1931.

President Bush Comes to Missouri to Rally the Base

President Bush comes to southwest Missouri in an effort to energize the Republican base in Missouri prior to an important election on Tuesday. Bush has spoken both at Springfield and Joplin, urging Republicans to go to the polls Tuesday and to talk up Talent and the rest of the Republican field to their neighbors and friends. Senator Jim Talent, the incumbent Republican, is in the political race of his life against Democrat Claire McCaskill. The two have been neck-an-neck in the public opinion polls. Political pundits say the race could determine whether Republicans hang on to control of the United State Senate in Washington or yield control to Democrats. The Bush rallies in Missouri come as part of the president’s criss-crossing of the country on behalf of Republican candidates. The president is trying to defy the predictions of many political experts that the Republican Party will lose control of the US House and, possibly, the Senate during these mid-term elections. A victory by Talent Tuesday would drastically hurt efforts by the Democratic Party to seize control of the chamber. Bush keeps repeating at rallies that Republicans need to “turn out the vote” and “get out and vote”. He has been quick to thank grassroots activists; those that the president says put up the signs, make the telephone calls and turn out the vote. Bush says that work is essential in Talent’s re-election campaign. Bush says the political pundits in Washington, D.C. have already decided who will win the election. He says they have been wrong before and will be wrong this time.

Date Set for Hearing on Execution Protocol

A date has been set for the next federal court hearing on the way Missouri executes prisoners. The federal appeals court will hear the challenge on January 10th. Federal Judge Fernando Gaitan says Missouri’s protocol does not guarantee the executed inmate feels no undue pain. The state says its revised procedures are adequate. The challenge to the procedure was filed earlier this year on behalf on prisoner Michael Taylor, whose execution was halted a few hours before it was to take place.

Mizzou/Nebraska Battle For Big 12 North Title

Quarterback Chase Daniel calls it “a title game.” Head Coach Gary Pinkel says it is a “great opportunity.” Fans, on the other hand, might just call it a must-win.

A possible Big 12 North Division Title is on the line when Mizzou takes on the Nebraska Cornhuskers tomorrow morning in Lincoln. The winner will take a huge step in securing a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

In order to achieve their goal, the Tigers will have to accomplish something they have not done since 1978. That is, beat the Huskers on the road. MU ended Nebraska’s national title hopes that year by winning in Lincoln 34-31.

Neither team will be crowned national champion this season, but each is looking at taking a big step in the right direction. Nebraska has not the Big 12 North Division since 1999. The Tigers do not know what that feels like. They are title-less since the formation of the Big 12.

Grudzielanek Wins First Career Gold Glove

All it took was a move to the American League. After spending the first 11 seasons of his career in the National League, Royals second baseman Mark Grudzielanek took home his first Gold Glove in his first year in the junior circuit.

Grudzielanek becomes the first player to win the award from a 100-loss team since Gary Pettis in 1989. The last Royals player to win a Gold Glove was Jermaine Dye back in 2000.

Grudzielanek opened this past season without committing an error in his first 77 games. He finished 2005 by stringing together a streak of 18 errorless games. Only three second basemen have put together longer streaks since 1960.

The National League’s Gold Glove Awards will be announced later today.
