Teen Birth Rate Keeps Dropping

Record-setting numbers are showing Missouri teenage girls and women have more freedom to pursue education and careers because they are not becoming mothers. The number of births to Missouri teen mothers started declining fifteen years ago….and a state health deparment analyst says that decline is reflected in several ways…. Along with that decline is the continued shrinkage of the percentage of girls and women 15 through 19 years old who give birth—reaching the lowest rates in almost a century. Health department analyst Joe Stockbauer says there were about 87-hundred births to teenagers last year in Missouri. He says Missouri recorded its lowest teenage birth rate since the end of World War Two and the lowests teenage fertility rate since the department began keeping records 95 years ago. He says several factors contribute to that record—the “just say no campaign” as well as family planning services and contraceptive available, among other things. There are other spinoffs, too, he says—fewer abortions and fewer children available for adoptions… On the other hand is the continued rise of out-of-wedlock births since the 1970s, but Stockbauer says that increase is coming among women 20 and older.

Group Wants to Advance Earthquake Response Procedures

A group that monitors economic growth along the lower Mississippi River doesn’t want Missourians hit by a new major earthquake to face the same kind of government failure Hurricane Katrina victims faced. The Delta Regional Authority is hosting the New Madrid Earthquake Conference on November 2nd and 3rd to address a potential disaster. The Authority’s Rex Nelson says response to an earthquake on the New Madrid Fault needs the emergency service coordination that Katrina’s response lacked. He warns not to underestimate the 150 – mile long fault, whose quake in 1812 rang church bells in Boston and caused the Mississippi River to flow backward. That’s why he’s pointing at failures with Katrina to promote the conference. Nelson wants to strengthen communication between federal, state and local governments, non-profit organizations and the business community in order to be better prepared for what the Authority says is the greatest risk east of the Rocky Mountains.

Doctor Advises Cards’ Fans to Keep the Screaming to a Minimum

The St. Louis Cardinals’ World Series appearance has a lot of Missouri baseball fans high-fiving, cheering, and screaming at the top of their lungs. It’s the loud screaming that could cause some problems for fans, making them hoarse the next day at work. Doctor John Eisenbeis – a specialist in disorders of the ear, nose, and throat – says there’s a price to pay for this vocally abusive behavior – vocal cords get swollen and people become hoarse. Doctor Eisenbeis adds the repeated yelling and screaming during a ballgame could cause a lot of trauma to the tissue of the larynx. He says anyone who does a lot of screaming during ballgames – at the ballpark, in a bar, or even at home – should drink a lot of water and avoid cigarettes or the swelling of the vocal cords might get worse.

Cards Take Lead in World Series

The manager, the trainer, and the umpires met at the mound to examine Chris Carpenter’s hand. Unlike in Game 3 with Kenny Rogers, there was no stain on the pitcher’s hand. There was also no blemish on the effort from Chris Carpenter. The reigning National League Cy Young Award tossed eight shutout innings limiting the Tigers to three hits while striking out six in a 5-0 win for the Redbirds.Jim Edmonds got St. Louis on the board with a two-run double in the fourth inning. The Cardinals scored two more runs in the seventh before capping the night off with a run in the eighth. None of the three Tigers hits came from Placido Polanco, Ivan Rodriguez, or Curtis Granderson, who bat 1st, 3rd, and 6th in the lineup respectively. All three of those guys are hitless this series. Game 4 will be Wednesday barring the forecasted rain storm in the St. Louis area. If the rain delays, Jeff Suppan will start for the Birds against Jeremy Bonderman for Detroit.
