The World Series gets underway tonight in Detroit, with the National League Champion St. Louis Cardinals taking on the American League Champion Tigers. And, as is often the case, the Fall Classic has led to friendly wagers being made by Governors of the states involved. In this year’s case, it’s Governor Matt Blunt placing a bet with Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm. If the Cards lose, Blunt will put on a Tigers jersey, hold a sign that says “Jim Leyland is my Tiger” and consume a Lil’ Caesars Pizza washed down by Vernor’s Ginger Ale. Leyland is the Detroit Manager, by the way. Blunt will also have to call a Detroit radio show and sing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” If the Tigers lose, Granholm will have to put on an Albert Pujols jersey, enjoy a Missouri branded Angus steak and a choice of Missouri wine, Bud Select, or Fitz’s Root Beer, and read the first chapter of the book, “Three Nights in August,” about Redbirds’ Manager Tony LaRussa. And, she’ll have to call a St. Louis radio show.
SW Missouri Community Fights Ethanol Plant
Ethanol has become a big issue in political campaigns in Missouri, but it appears as though the NIMBY – Not In My Back Yard – effect might be a bigger issue in the southwest Missouri community of Rogersville. Residents are fighting a proposed $165-Million ethanol plant. They fear the plant would sap underground water supplies that feed their wells. Several residents have gone to court to try to prevent the drilling of a test well by a company with a contract to buy property in the area for the construction of an ethanol plant.

St. Peters Mayor Pleads Guilty to Bribery Charge but Remains in Office
The Mayor of St. Peters admits he’s committed a crime, but he’s staying on the job, just the same. In federal court in St. Louis, on Friday, St. Peters Mayor Shawn Brown pleaded guilty to a felony bribery charge. Brown is scheduled to be sentenced on January 11th, and could receive a maximum penalty of ten years behind bars or a $250,000 fine. And, he could stay in the Mayor’s seat until he’s sentenced. Under the law, any public office holder convicted of a crime must step down from that office upon sentencing – which is still more than two months away. In the interim, if Brown refuses to resign, St. Charles County officials could take steps to remove him from office. Brown was indicted in August on a charge of accepting a bribe from a company that won a contract to install red-light cameras in St. Peters.
