School Shootings the Focus of Special Web Cast

The State Public Safety Department and the Missouri School Boards’ Association take to the Internet for a web-based panel discussion of how to prevent and deal with school violence. Much of the discussion involving a panel of educators and public safety officials centered on planning for an eventual incident. Public Safety Director Mark James says law enforcement and school officials must work together before something happens so that they will be better prepared to act when an incident takes place. The telecast came about as a result of the recent shootings at a Joplin middle school and at schools in several other states. It was intended for school officials, law enforcement, first responders, parents, and any other Missourians interested in keeping our schools safe.

Mizzou DE Makes Lombardi List

Brian Smith, a University of Missouri defensive end, has been named a 2006 Rotary Lombardi Award semi-finalist. Smith, who holds the MU career sack record with 31.5, is one of 12 semi-finalists for the award that goes to college football’s best lineman on either offense or defense. Linebackers apply too.

There could be other sack records to fall before Smith is done in Columbia. He already tied the school’s single-game record earlier this year with four against New Mexico. Smith only needs three more sacks to rewrite the Big 12 Conference career mark of 34, set by Texas Tech’s Aaron Hunt (1999-2002).

The list will be narrowed down to four finalists and announced Nov. 7th. The award will be presented Dec. 6th in Houston, Texas.

The other 11 semi-finalists include DE Gaines Adams of Clemson, OT Justin Blalock of Texas, DE Mkristo Bruce of Washington State, LB Buster Davis of Florida State, DE Quentin Moses of Georgia, OT Dan Mozes of West Virginia, DT Quinn Pitock of Ohio State, LB Paul Posluzny of Penn State, OT Joe Thomas of Wisconsin, LB Patrick Willis of Mississippi, and DE LaMarr Woodley of Michigan.

Mets Force Game Seven

The champagne stayed on ice, and so did the NLCS as rookie John Maine pitched the Mets to a 4-2 win over the Cardinals Wednesday. The series now comes down to a win-or-go-home Game 7 Thursday.

Maine escaped trouble early, putting runners on second and third in the first inning with only one out. He made quick work of Jim Edmonds – striking him out on three pitches – before hitting Juan Encarnacion and loading the bases. Scott Rolen fouled off a few pitches working a 2-2 count then flied out to end the inning. Maine was removed from the game after shutting the Redbirds out on two hits and striking out five over 5 1/3 innings.

Jose Reyes helped the Mets release any nervous energy hitting a leadoff home run in the first.

New York added another run in the fourth when Shawn Green singled in Carlos Beltran. The lead stretched to 4-0 on a Paul Lo Duca two-run single in the seventh.

The Cardinals had some success against Mets closer Billy Wagner in the ninth. Encarnacion led off the inning with a single followed by a Rolen double that put runners in scoring position again. Wagner retired the next two hitters, but surrendered a two-run double to So Taguchi that cut the lead to 4-2. David Eckstein came to the plate representing the tying run but grounded out to end the game.

Maine’s brilliant effort was a necessity especially going against Chris Carpenter, last year’s NL Cy Young award winner. Carpenter allowed two runs on seven hits in six innings.

Jeff Suppan is scheduled to start for the Cardinals in tonight’s series finale. He won Game 3 tossing eight scoreless innings.

Oliver Perez, who won Game 4, should get the nod for the Mets.

National Study Points to High Cost of Health Insurance in Missouri

A study by a national consumer health group says the cost of health insurance premiums for a typical Missouri family in nearing $11,000 a year. The study says about 80 percent of the cost is paid by employers. Families USA says costs for workers have increased twice as much as they have for employers. The organization says those are just premium costs. The figures do not include out of pocket expenses such as co-pays anddeductibles. The study says health insurance premiums have gone up more than 61 percent in the last seven years, more than three times the increase in median earnings of Missouri workers.

Fifth Debate Follows Theme of Fourth Debate

A fifth and final United States Senate debate covers virtually the same ground as the fourth debate, with a bit of a twist thrown in. Senator Jim Talent seemed relieved after the debate held Wednesday evening at the University Academy Charter School in Kansas City, saying it was nice to have all five debates over with. Talent, the incumbent Republican, kept with the theme he hit on Monday in Springfield; attacking Democrat Claire McCaskill, especially on family finances. He again called on McCaskill to release her husband’s tax returns, arguing that where a senate candidate derives her money is relevant. McCaskill, aware of the strategy after the Springfield debate, attempted to deflect it during the debate in Kansas City. She told the audience that she would let them in on a secret, stating that Senator Talent didn’t really believe what he said in his opening remarks. McCaskill said Talent is going along with his political advisors who have told him he has to hit McCaskill hard and make it personal. Talent said that isn’t so. He reiterated statements he made after the Springfield debate; that his newly aggressive tone is striking at relevant issues in this campaign. And he said he would continue to do that.McCaskill believes the Talent camp has decided to go negative in the final weeks. She declared during the campaign that she would not go negative and, at one point, apologized for calling Talent a “false patriot” during a series of news conferences held throughout the state. Talent said he accepts her apology. The debate was sponsored by KMBC-TV, KCPT, KCUR and the Independence Examiner.
