The United Nations is mulling over a poposal to slap sanctions on North Korea following that country’s claimed testing of a nuclear device. And, it appears the Chinese – who have great influence over the North Koreans – will go along with limited sanctions. The North Koreans are insisting the United States engage the Pyongyang government in one-on-one talks, something the U.S. is not willing to do. The U.S. says there should be a resumption of the stalled six-party talks. West-central Missouri Congressman Ike Skelton, the ranking Democrat on the U.S. House Armed Services Committee, says the multi-lateral talks are preferred, but the one-on-one option should not be ruled out. Skelton says the U.S. and the U.N. must do what they can to solve problems in Korea diplomatically.
