Huard Impressive In Reserve Role

The sound of Trent Green’s head bouncing off the turf after being hit by a Bengals defensive lineman was deafening. The silence of the Arrowhead crowd wondering who was next on the depth chart was louder.

Damon Huard was the name everyone in attendance was searching for. No one could come up with the answer because Huard had not completed a pass since 2000. Three starts later, Huard is 2-1 and the entire NFL is taking notice now. He passed for 288 yards and two touchdowns last week against Arizona earning himself the AFC Offensive Player of the Week award.

During the three starts, Huard has completed 73-of-104 passes for 769 yards and five scores, good enough for the second best passer rating in the league.

If Huard continues to play well in Green’s absence, it will be the roar of the Arrowhead crowd that is deafening.

Nursing Home CEO Faces Long Prison Term

A big nursing home company and its former CEO admit they conspired to defraud Medicare and Medicaid to the tune of at least four-million dollars. The federal prosecutor for eastern Missouri, Catherine Hanaway, says the care provided by American Healthcare and its CEO Robert Wachter was almost non-existent. She says one patient was beaten to death by an employee. Other patients were mistreated and ignored. Some were left to lie in their own soiled beds. The prosecutor recommends Wachter go to prison for 18 months.

Chiefs Add Defensive Back

The Chiefs felt the need to add depth to its secondary after the loss of defensive back Benny Sapp, so the team signed Michael Bragg of the practice squad.

Terms of the agreement were not released.

Bragg, a second-year player from Texas A&M-Kingsville, first joined the Chiefs in Feb. and has been on the practice squad during the season so far. He broke into the league as an undrafted free agent with the New York Giants.

Minor Change For Cardinals… Reyes In, Marquis Out

The Cardinals head into tonight’s NLCS series with the Mets having made a minor change to its roster.

Manager Tony LaRussa decided to include pitcher Anthony Reyes on the roster and leave off pitcher Jason Marquis. The move is puzzling because the two were switched during the previous series against the Padres. Prior to the beginning of the postseason, LaRussa went with Marquis over Reyes.

Reyes pitched the regular season finale against the Brewers, but never got out of the first inning, surrendering two homers. Four of the six batters he pitched to eventually scored. Reyes finished the season with a 5-8 record in 17 starts with a 5.06 ERA.

Marquis made 33 starts compiling a 14-16 record with a 6.02 ERA.

Supreme Court Affirms Ruling Placing Tobacco Tax Initiative on Ballot

The State Supreme Court has ruled the tobacco tax initiative should appear on the November ballot. In a unanimous decision, the judges affirmed Cole County Circuit Judge Tom Brown’s ruling that the measure should be placed on the ballot. The initiative had initially been rejected by the Secretary of State due to a lack of valid petition signatures from the 5th Congressional District in Kansas City. Additional signatures were found, supporters of the initiative – the Committee for a Healthy Future – launched legal action, and won in court. Opponents – Missourians Against Tax Abuse – then appealed the lower court ruling to the State Supreme Court, which has now affirmed the lower court ruling. In addition, the Supreme Court has ordered that any motion for a rehearing of this case must be filed on or before 4 pm this Friday.
