DED Talks up New Workforce Training Technology

The State Economic Development Department’s Division of Workforce Development is talking up its new innovative training solution which is designed to use state-of-the-art training technology to upgrade the skills of job seekers and those looking for workplace advancement. Division Direcor Rod Nunn says visitors to any of the 42 One-Stop Career Centers will have access to an interactive comtency-based training that will help to improve such things as resume writing, job search techniques, and telephone etiquette. The resources will be available, at first, in the Career Center resource rooms. It’s hoped some of the workshops will be offered online in the near future.

Ameren Reaches Taum Sauk Deal With Feds

Governor Matt Blunt is making it clear he is not at all pleased with an agreement reached between AmerenUE and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission over last December’s Taum Sauk reservoir collapse in Reynolds County. The Commission has announced the utility has agreed to a $15-Million settlement over the breach, which allowed the release of 1.3-Billion gallons of water into Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park, causing extensive damage. Blunt spokesman Spence Jackson says that while the deal might satisfy Ameren’s debt to the federal government, it does not satisfy the company’s obligations to Missourians. As a result of the breach, the company faces state environmental civil penalties for water quality violations. Jackson says talks with the utility over copensation for Missourians continue.

Failure to Report Racial Profiling Data Costs Police Departments Money

Governor Matt Blunt is withholding state money from several local law enforcement agencies that have failed to comply with Missouri law requiring reporting of racial profiling data. The money is from the Peace Officer Standards and Training funds for local police forces. The Governor has a right to withhold these funds from any department that has failed to file the required information with the Attorney Genral’s Office. Nine departments are being denied a total of $3,909. The funds were kept from 18 law enforcement agencies last year. State law requires departments to report such things as the age, sex, race of driver, and the reason for a stop, each time time a vehicle is pulled over. The information is used to prepare an annual report on racial profiling.

Skelton Tells of Trouble Getting Photo ID to Vote

As both sides prepare to argue the Voter Photo ID case before the State Supreme Court, a Missouri Congressman tells his story about coping with the new law. West-Central Missouri Congressman Ike Skelton doesn’t drive, so he went to his hometown of Lexington to the Lafayette County license bureau to pick up his non-driver’s license photo ID needed under the new law to vote. But officials in Jefferson City told local license bureau workers that Skelton’s Congressional identification wasn’t sufficient, that he would need to present a birth certificate or passport. Skelton says he returned a month later with the passport that he had left in his Congressional office in Washington, D. C. He presented the passport and received the non-driver’s license ID. Skelton still can’t believe his Congressional ID wasn’t sufficient. He notes it’s sufficient to get him on and off airplanes. He says no one has ever questioned it and he’s flabbergasted that it wasn’t accepted. A circuit judge has thrown the Voter Photo ID law out. Whether it is reinstated will be up to the State Supreme Court, which hears the case on Wednesday.
