Cards’ fans can breath a little easier today, thanks to last night’s 10-5 shallacking of the Brewers. With the Astros’ 4-1 loss to the Braves in Atlanta, St. Louis’s magic number is down to just two.

Preston Wilson’s two-run homer in the second allowed the Cards to jump out to an early 2-1 lead, and starting pitcher Jeff Weaver took it from there. The in-season trade acquisition gave up three runs in five and two-thirds innings, earning his fifth victory in a Cardinals’ uniform.

Albert Pujols added his 48th home run of the season in the fifth. Chris Capuano took the loss for Milwaukee.
