The Blues finished in last place a year ago. If the preseason means anything – and by all accounts, it does not – Blues fans can almost expect much of the same this season after St. Louis finished their regular season tune-up losing to Minnesota 4-2 Thursday.

Preseason in the NHL is much like the preseason in any other sport. The starters usually get a lot of rest. Rookies, reserves, and those just trying to hang on get most of the minutes, so the 1-5 record the Blues put up could be misleading.

Next Thursday, St. Louis will be in San Jose to open the regular season, and those games count. If the Blues want to come away with a victory, they will have to limit their penalties, which they had nine minors against Minnesota.
