Five years after the September 11th terrorist attacks, state officials think they’ve figured out how to get the most out of their share of federal Homeland Security dollars – just in time to see that pot of money shrink. To get rid of some of the bureaucracy, nine regions – drawn along Highway Patrol troop divisions – have been set up with committees in each region making decisions as to what their areas need. State Public Safety Director Mark James believes this will take out some of the bureaucracy that has hurt the federal grant process in the past. James says this should make things more efficient, but it won’t mean any more federal Homeland Security dollars for the state.
