A campaign to improve the condition of hundreds of Missouri bridges has been unveiled by the State Transportation Department. Transportation Director Pete Rahn says the Safe & Sound Bridges Improvement Plan targets 800 bridges in poor condition for improvement by 2012. MoDOT will award a single contract to design and build the bridge upgrades as well as to maintain the bridges in good condition for at least 25 years. The initiative is expected to cost between $400-Million and $600-Million, to be paid for with existing federal bridge replacement funds. The bridges to be repaired are located in every region of the state.
