In hindsight, maybe all Royals’ starter Mark Redman needed to do was add a pitch to his repetoire. Featuring a new cut fastball, the lone Kansas City All-Star limited the red-hot Minnesota Twins to just five hits yesterday on the way to his second career shutout.

John Buck gave Redman the only run he would need in the fifth inning. Following back-to-back singles from Emil Brown and Ryan Shealy, Buck drove Twins’ rookie Matt Garza’s pitch to centerfield, scoring Brown. Andres Blanco added an RBI goundout later that inning.

Redman allowed leadoff singles in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but got out of trouble each time. He forced Joe Mauer, the AL’s leading hitter, to ground into a double play and leave two men on.
