Mark Grudzielanek signed a one-year extension with the Royals, locking him up through the 2007 season. The veteran second baseman showed his appreciation by collecting three hits and driving in four runs leading Kansas City past the White Sox 10-4.
Grudzielanek’s three-run homer produced half the runs in a six-run third inning. He was almost traded before the deal was made. The Tigers lost their second baseman, Placido Palanco, to injury and was interested in acquiring Grudzielanek as his replacement.
The White Sox came into the series on a five-game winning streak, including a three-game sweep of the major league’s best Tigers. But things haven’t been so easy against the Royals, who have the worst record in the majors. Kansas City has taken both games of the series so far.
Four Royals had two hits in the game. Ryan Shealy also homered and had two RBI.
Alex Cintron’s grand slam in the ninth provided Chicago with their only runs of the game.
Adam Bernero earned his first win of the season, tossing six shutout innings. Jimmy Gobble and Andrew Sisco pitched the seventh and eighth. Scott Dohmann pitched the ninth, giving up the slam to Cintron.
