The chairmen of legislative transportation committees say talks have been started that could lead to a one-cent sales tax to finance rebuilding of Interstates 44 and 70. Senator Bill Stouffer of Napton thinks a good selling point wouild be a plan to set aside two lanes in each direction just for trucks. The issue would need voter approval. The earliest that could happen would be 2008. State transportation director Pete Rahn publicly voiced the idea first during a seminar in Columbia on the future of the Interstate system.
