The Talent and McCaskill for Senate campaigns are at odds over a series of McCaskill radio advertisements that the Talent campaign claims are in violation of federal election laws. Rich Chrismer, Director of Communications for the Talent for Senate campaign claims there are two violations: Democratic Senate Candidate Claire McCaskill failed to file the appropriate paperwork to run ads which reference Senator Jim Talent; and McCaskill does not identify the office she is seeking, which is required by law. He says that as a result of the violations, McCaskill has given up the right to pay lower ad prices that are set aside for candidates who observe the campaign rules. Adrianne Marsh with McCaskill for Missouri denies the campaign is doing anything illegal, but is looking into the possibility that a clerical error might have occurred. As for the failure to identify McCaskill as a U.S. Senate candidate, Marsh says the intent of the law is to make clear who paid for the advertisement, and that has been done with the disclaimer. Attorneys for the Talent campaign have sent letters of complaint to several radio stations. The campaign says it reserves the right to take further action with the appropriate federal officials.
