The Cardinals haven’t hit rock bottom, they’re still in first place in the National League Central but getting swept by the NL’s worst team is pretty disheartening. St. Louis ventured off to Pittsburgh looking to recover from a grueling series split with the Reds. The Pirates, however, refused to lie down and quit. Instead, they swept the three-game series capping it off with a 7-0 win.

Jason Marquis got the loss, despite pitching well. He gave up two homers, but held the Pirates to two runs in six innings. It was his replacement, Adam Wainright, who let the game get away. Wainright gave up four runs in just 1/3 of an inning.

Paul Maholm took home the victory after 6.2 innings of shutout ball.

Adding to the Redbirds pain, Scott Spiezio injured his Achilles Tendon in the ninth inning.

St. Louis did rack up 10 hits, but left 13 runners on base.

Jason Bay and Joe Randa each homered. Chris Duffy had 3-RBI.
