The Cardinals came out and made a statement, beating the Reds 13-1. The two teams came into the game separated by just 3.5 games in the National League Central.
It was St. Louis’ bats and excellent pitching that stole this one. Four Cardinals homered in the contest. Chris Duncan and Scott Rolen both had three hits and a homer. Yadier Molina hit a round-tripper and drove in four RBI. Scott Spiezio was 2-for-2 including a home run and two runs driven in.
Jeff Weaver benefited from the explosive offense, but didn’t need it much. He gave up just one run in six innings and struck out seven.
Reds starter Elizardo Ramirez wasn’t nearly as impressive. He only lasted 1.2 innings, surrendering seven runs – six earned.
OTHER NEWS AND NOTES:
After rebounding from a severe shoulder injury last season, Cardinals third baseman Scott Rolen has been listed as a candidate for Comeback Player of the Year. This season, Rolen is hitting .321 with 16 home runs and 73 RBI. He was also selected to the All-Star game.
Mark Mulder is expected to be called back to the Majors soon. The Cardinals left-handed starter was sent to the minors to rehab his ailing shoulder. He made a start for A Quad Cities Sunday. St. Louis’ front-office and coaching staff liked what they saw as Mulder went five innings, allowing two hits, one a home run for the only run he allowed. Mulder will probably make his next start Friday in either AA Springfield or AAA Memphis. Both teams will be at home.
