The Cardinals were coming off their first win in nine games, and Jeff Suppan made sure they didn’t return to their recent losing ways. Just two days after the Cardinals ended their second eight-game losing streak of the season, Suppan quieted the Brewers bats in a 7-1 win, helping St. Louis begin a new streak.

Suppan was tremendous holding the Brewers to one run on four hits in 7.1 innings and striking out seven. He had only given up three measly singles before Mike Rivera homered off him to start the eighth inning. Jorge Sosa came on in relief to get the save.

The Cardinals weren’t bad offensively either. Albert Pujols had three hits, Ronnie Belliard had two hits, and Juan Encarnacion was 2-for-4 including a home run that went along with his two RBI and two runs scored. Scott Rolen also homered for the Redbirds.

The Cardinals won the series at home 2-1. St. Louis is 3.5 games up on the Reds in the National League Central with a four-game series in Cincinnati beginnng tonight. Jeff Weaver is the scheduled starter for the Cards against Elizardo Ramirez for the Reds.
