Members of the Missouri Mental Health Task Force get an earful during their public hearing in St. Louis. And, while discussion ranged wide about how the state cares for the mentally ill and developmentally disabled, much of it focused on Governor Matt Blunt’s proposal to close the Bellefontaine Habilitation Center in north St. Louis County. Blunt wants to close the state-run center for the mentally retarded and move residents either to other state facilities or private homes with state contracts. Some at the public hearing backed Bellefontaine, while others praised the use of private homes. The task force meets today in Kansas City.
