The Cardinals have lost five straight after losing to the Phillies 5-3. Philadelphia second baseman Chase Utley extended his hitting streak to 33 games, which puts him five games away from the franchise record set by current shorstop Jimmy Rollins. Utley immediately added to the streak with a single in the first inning before adding an infield single in the ninth. St. Louis native Ryan Howard returned home to go 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Leadoff hitter Jimmy Rollins chipped in with three hits.

Although the Cardinals scored three runs, they only had three hits and everything happened for them in the fourth inning. Four Phillies pitchers shut them down the rest of the way. Starter Scott Mathieson, who started this season in the minor leagues, got his first win of the year allowing three runs on three hits in five innings. Relievers Geoff Geary, Arthur Rhodes, and Tom Gordon combined to no-hit the Cardinals over the final four innings.
