State education officials are closely watching the situation in St. Louis, where an interim School Superintendent is at the helm following Friday’s dismissal of Superintendent Creg Williams by the city’s School Board. Emotions are running high in St. Louis, with Mayor Francis Slay saying he would support a state takeover of the district. But Jim Morris with the State Education Department says the circumstances under which the state can get involved do not exist. There are two such circumstances: The District is unaccredited for two consecutive years, and; a District is unable to function because it is on the verge of financial collapse. Morris says the inmmediate issue is the ability of the school disrict to operate and open schools, as scheduled, on August 28th.
