With a stroke of a pen, the state’s campaign contribution limits have been repealed. Governor Matt Blunt signed legislation in a private ceremony. Supporters claim the system was riddled with abuse. They say full disclosure is more effective than limits. Voters overwhelmingly approved campaign contribution limits in 1994, but the limits were tossed out by the courts. Limits approved by the Legislature then kicked in. Attorney General Jay Nixon, a Democrat, had urged Blunt, a Republican, to veto the bill. Nixon, widely believed to be challenging a Blunt re-election bid in 2008, calls the law a radical departure from the will of the people.
