The term “handicap” is a familiar one in sports. It is a way of penalizing the more talented performer to make him more competative with less gifted competitors. For example, a fast horse in a field of slower ones carries extra weight. It’s a system of golf strokes that makes a poor golfer a little more competitive.

But to one golfer the word “handicap” had a special meaning.
