The State Auditor and the State Revenue Director are at odds over the handling of the conversion of State Revenue Departemnt offices to private fee offices. Auditor Claire McCaskill claims the conversion of eleven offices to private business was not handled appropriately, involved misstep after misstep, and was not an example of good stewardship of taxpayer dollars. And, McCaskill believes the Revenue Department has been less than forthcoming in explaining its actions. Revenue Director Trish Vincent says McCaskill is all wrong. She claims the Revenue Department moved very quickly to make the transition, did so without loss of service to taxpayers, and even brought in money to state coffers. Vincent says McCaskill’s criticism is politically motivated. She points to the fact fee offices have existed for a long time, and that McCaskill never conducted any similar audits when Democratic administrations ran things from the Governor’s Office.
