A significant cut to the amount of federal homeland security dollars Missouri will receive is seen as unwelcomed, but not necessarily unexpected, news. Missouri will receive just under $43 million in federal homeland security grants, down nearly 30% from a year ago. The state’s Public Safety Director, Mark James, says the cuts might stem from the fact that a lot of time has passed since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. James, though, does point out a lot of the money right after September 11th went to infrastructure that does not necessarily need more money every year. And he says the state’s share of the federal money this time is enough to make some significant advances. James credits state and local officials for making their cases to the feds that is helping Missouri to get at least the money it will.
