Supreme Court Upholds Missouri’s Megan’s Law

The Missouri Supreme Court has handed down several decisions. Among them, one in which the judges unanimously agreed that most provisions of Missouri’s Megan’s Law – the law requiring sex offenders to register with law enforcement – are constitutional. However, the Court did rule those convicted of or pleading guilty to sexual crimes before the January 1st, 1995 implementation date don’t have to register. The Court also ordered a new penalty phase trial in the capital murder case of Terrance Anderson, convicted of executing Stephen and Debbie Rainwater of Poplar Bluff with a .357 handgun in 1997. The Court ruled unanimously that Anderson’s counsel was ineffective during the penalty phase.

NLRB Approves Unionization Plan at KCI

The National Labor Relations Board has cleared the way for privately-hired security screeners at Kansas City International Airport to unionize. The company that employs them had argued they should not be able to unionize because their federal counterparts are not allowed to join unions. But the NLRB says Congress has not prohibited private screeners from unionizing – just federally-paid ones. KCI is one of six airports using privately-hired screeners.

Steyn Signs With Spurs

The popular ones from big schools still haven’t signed yet. No Thomas Gardner, Jimmy McKinney, or any other Missouri College basketball player for that matter. Well, there is one so far. Southwest Baptist’s 7-foot-2 center, Frans Steyn, signed a free agent contract to play with the San Antonio Spurs.

He’ll begin his tryout with the team playing in next month’s NBA Summer League. Steyn received calls from the Sacramento Kings and Miami Heat before deciding on San Antonio as being the best choice.

The Oklahoma State transfer only played one season at SBU. Steyn has a pretty decent chance of making the club. The Spurs need a center after trading Rasho Nesterovic to Toronto and Nazr Mohammed could leave the team as a free agent.

The summer league games will be held July 14-21 as part of the Rocky Mountain Review in Salt Lake City.

Spinks Returns Home For Title Fight

St. Louis native, Cory Spinks will return to the boxing ring, July 8, in a junior-middleweight title fight against champion Roman Karmazin of Russia. The 12-round main event, being held at the Savvis Center, is being tabbed by promoter Don King as the “Gateway to Glory.”

Several other Missouri-born fighters will be on the undercard. Devon Alexander, St. Louis, will go for the WBC youth welterweight championship against Tyler Ziolkowski of St. Joseph, MO.

Park Hill, MO native, Matt Greer, will step into the ring against Mario Preskar in a six round heavyweight bout.

Middleweight Andy Utterback, Hannibal, MO, is scheduled for a four round fight with Louis Turner of Chicago.

Blues Re-sign Veterans

The St. Louis Blues retained two of its veteran players, re-signing forward Ryan Johnson and defenseman Matt Walker.

Johnson played in 65 last season, scored three goals and six assist.

Walker appeared in 54 games and tallied a pair of assists.
